Rediscovering Silhouette
I’ve been thinking about silhouette a lot lately. It doesn’t seem to be something that is talked about much these days. It almost feels like a nostalgic, an old-fashioned term. Instead of talking about silhouette, there seems to be more discussion about what is flattering and “in style.”
Silhouette is shape, balance, even a feeling. And the beauty is, it’s not restrictive. Playing with silhouette allows you to let clothes work for your unique shape and aesthetic.
So, some thoughts and ideas on rediscovering silhouette….
Get Inspired
Look and see what the designers intended and how the brands and online shops are showing the silhouettes. I personally love Net-A-Porter for inspiration.
Yes, I am fully aware that most of the models are five foot eleven and a size xs/small. You can still get inspired with ideas on how to make it work for you. Focus on the shape, where and how individual pieces fall.
What do you love? What silhouettes can you recreate with pieces you already own?

Define your own rules that work for you
When our bodies change, it’s easy to get caught up in all the things that don’t fit the way they used to and that can make it hard to figure out what actually feels good and lights us up. The thing about silhouette, you can use clothes to create the shape and vibe you want.
You may have a curvy figure and not always want to feel and look sexy. You may have a straight figure but want to wear more volume. You might be petite but love a loose flow-y look.
Figure out your own rules that work for you. And when you find one or two silhouettes that you love, stick with it.
Try Something New
Don’t be afraid to try something if you like it. You may just be pleasantly surprised what you see and how you feel. Throw out all your preconceived thoughts on what you can and can’t wear because you are not tall enough, not thin enough, or someone once told you shouldn’t wear x because of you are x.
This past summer, I found my new go-to silhouette: a fit and flare strappy maxi sundress. So when I recently discovered a pleated maxi skirt, I thought, why not give it a try…
It turned out to be just the thing I was looking for fall and winter for an alternative to jeans.
Take some time to rediscover silhouette. Experiment. Take some selfies and look at your shape. You may just see yourself in a new way and even have fun getting dressed.
