Curating your closet in Covid times

There’s no denying that living through a pandemic for almost a year has impacted the way we dress. Since we’ve spent so much more time in our homes, comfort and casual have become top priorities. So what happens when things are back to “normal?” Will you even want to go back to how you dressed before?

The philosophy behind closet curation is that as our lifestyle changes, our style evolves too.  So by gradually editing and letting go of the things that no longer fit you or your lifestyle, you create a closet that is functional and you love.

So how do you decide what to keep and what to let go of today?

Think about your personal style.

Be honest with yourself. Has your style changed or evolved over the past year?  Have you embraced a more casual vibe or are you ready to get dressed up again once restaurants and parties are in full swing.  Pay attention to what works for you and makes you feel good.

Consider your new lifestyle.

Have you shifted to remote working for the foreseeable future?  Have you redefined your career or slowed down? What does your new life look like? How do you want to look and feel?

Focus on fit.

Pieces that have been pushed to the back of your closet for all these months - blazers, trousers, dressier pieces, heels - focus on how those pieces fit.  A beautiful fitting piece will always feel modern and timeless because it looks like it was made for you. If the piece pulls in the wrong places, shoulders are off, it’s time to it let go. If it fits well, but the style or color no longer suits you, sell or donate it.

Keep the best version.

If you have multiples of the same item, chances are you always go for your favorite one and the others will just sit in your closet. Ask yourself why you passed on them. If they aren’t your first choices now, chances are they won’t be later down the road.

Rethink how to wear your favorite pieces.

Blazers can double as a light jacket in spring with denim and sneakers. Joggers can be worn as pants with an easy blouse and slides.  Get creative on styling pieces you love in new ways.

Let go of pieces that are uncomfortable and don’t fit.

Are you really going to wear shoes that hurt anymore?  Are you holding onto jeans two sizes too small?  Let go of anything uncomfortable and that doesn’t fit and focus on appreciating the things that do.

Hold onto your signature accessories.

Investment bags never go out of style and can instantly elevate a casual outfit. Consider simplifying your jewelry collection and curating signature pieces that reflect your unique personal style.

Moving forward

Elevated effortless pieces that are comfortable and make you look and feel put together will take precedent.  It’s a perfect time to refine your foundation pieces from what you already own. Natural materials like cotton, linen and cashmere are timeless, feel lux and can be always styled to feel modern. By curating, you are also simplifying. And simplifying and refining can be so impactful in such a crazy stressful time.
