How to shop your closet this Spring

Do you know that saying that we wear 20% of our closets 80% of the time? So what’s going on with that 80%?

So before you hit the stores, why not shop your closet first?  You’ll see what you already have and find out what you really need so you can make sure you buy the right things this Spring.

Here are a some tips so you can make the most out of your shop your closet experience:

Get inspired

Did you ever see the way someone puts things together and you think….“ I have something like that” or “I would have never thought to put those together.”  Do a little online browsing at your favorite stores and brands.  See how they are pairing things together to get ideas that you can re-create with what you already have.  Create a board on Pinterest where so you can save all the images and easily reference them later.

Organize your space

Before you jump right in, you want to make sure your space is set up to be shopped. Make sure all your favorites pieces are clean and are in your closet. Do a quick categorize by type so you can see all your duplicates.  Have a basket or bag handy so you can easily let go of pieces that no longer work for you. If you really want to make it boutique like, light a candle and put on some of your favorite music…maybe even fix yourself a little sparkly drink. :)

Go shopping

Start pulling pieces to create similar looks that you found online.  Don’t get hung up if the item is not identical to what you found. The idea is to create a vibe. It’s how pieces are put together that can really capture the look that resonated with you.  Don’t forget your shoes, bags and jewelry: these finishing pieces will complete and personalize your outfit.

Try things on

This is crucial. Try everything on and pay attention to how things fit and how you feel. If you love how a pair of jeans fit you, try them on with a bunch of different top and shoes combinations to see how many different looks you can create. Pay attention to how subtle combinations can play off one another. Three different washes of jeans can have a completely different vibe with the same blouse.

Snap a selfie

Love an outfit? Snap a picture! The great thing about a picture is you can see proportions and how things are fitting your body. Save all your pics of your favorite outfits in a folder on your phone so you can remember them later when you don’t know what to wear.
