Wardrobe staples every woman over 40 should have
Full disclosure, this is not the blog post that you think it is.
I’m not going to tell you need a trench coat, a little black dress, a white button down, black pants, and a pair of pumps.
Instead, I’m going to ask you to pause and think about how you live and what you love to wear that really lights you up. Those are your wardrobe staples. The pieces that you get a lot of mileage from; pieces that are easy to pair with most things in your closet and most importantly, pieces that make sense for YOU.
Just for fun… here are some wardrobe staples from my closet and why they work for me:
Straight Leg Jeans
Straight leg jeans are the “trousers” of my wardrobe. They are timeless, easy to pair with every top I own, really comfortable and I can easily dress them up with a pair of heels and a nice bag to go out to dinner.
A Cashmere Cardigan
Anyone else run hot one minute and cold the next? Welcome to layering. I personally love cardigans for this reason and because they are so versatile. I can throw them over a blouse and feel put together or over graphic tee for an edgier look. I also love that cashmere makes everything feel elevated… bonus they are hand-washable.
An Effortless Dress
Once I hit 45, I really embraced wearing dresses, especially in the warmer months. They are so easy to throw on with flats, a low heel, or even a sneaker. I’m always on the lookout for ones with an effortless vibe that I can wear day or night.
Low Heels
After a few foot surgeries and also having wide feet, I can’t really wear anything over 2 1/2 inches anymore. But I still love a beautiful feminine shoe - for special occasions and even to dress up jeans.
A Great Fitting Jacket
I don’t have the need to dress “classic professional” in my industry, but If I want to look smart, I grab one of my jackets that I’ve curated over the past decade and throw it on over a dress or blouse with jeans. It’s my idea of an updated suit.
Don’t fall in the trap of thinking you “should” own or wear something because it’s age appropriate, classic or “in.” Now is the time to wear what you want and celebrate what you feel great in. Hey, that’s what getting old gracefully is all about, isn’t it?
I’d love to hear what your wardrobe staples are. Let me know and get in touch here…
