Simple Closet Curation & Organization Tips for the New Year
Let me guess, did you go into the new year with a commitment to let go of the things that aren’t working so you can focus on what matters most? Was one of your goals to finally get your closet in order so you can start every day feeling great?
Yet your closet is so jammed pack, it stresses you out to even look at it. You have a closet full of clothes but feel like you have nothing to wear.
I know it can be overwhelming to know where to start, so here are some simple tips you can do to start feeling your best right now …
Start with your favorites
Instead of focusing on the pieces that don’t fit or bad purchases you made, focus on what does work today.
So what if only one pair of jeans fits you or you wear the same couple tops and sweaters on rotation. I can’t tell you the amount of women who tell me they wear the same things over again… because they are their favorite pieces!
Take it a step further and make note of why your favorite pieces work for you… what is it about the fit, the fabric or the color that you love? Use those pieces as your bar as you edit and it will make it easy to decide what you are ready to let go of.
Edit one category at a time
Don’t pull everything out at once. It’s easy to get daunted by a huge pile of clothes. Instead, start with one category from this season.
Carve out a little bit of time - 15 minutes to a 1/2 hour. Put on one of your favorite things, like your best fitting jeans, and try on all your tops and sweaters. Then move onto the next category when you have a little more time.
Give it a test run
During an edit, your clothes usually fall into one of three categories: 1 - You love it and wear it 2 - You no longer love it or it doesn’t fit 3 - You are unsure.
The first two are no brainers, but what to do with the pieces you are not sure about? Give it a test run! Wear it for the day. See how you feel it in. Often it’s the fit that is the reason…it pulls or doesn’t lay right. And if you’re still not sure, clean it and put away to review next year.
Give your stuff some space
This is where the editing comes into play. By giving your pieces breathing room, both hanging and folding, you can see what you have and it’s better for your clothes. The fabric can air out and won’t wrinkle.
Bonus, you’ll feel like you are browsing your own personal boutique when you are getting dressed.
Organize by what works for you
There’s no “right” way to organize. The goal is to organize so you can find everything easily and get dressed stress free.
I recently curated a clients’s space to feel like a boutique with all casual items together… denim hung next to knits and in another section were all her dressier pieces.
Another client had lots of hanging sections so I curated and organized Fall/Winter in one closet and Spring/Summer in another.
Take a look at your space with a fresh eye: do you have more hanging space or shelves? What makes sense for you?
Invest in matching hangers
The simplest way to make a biggest impact in your closet is to have matching hangers. White or natural wood are great sustainable choices that make your clothes look beautiful and slim velvet are great for smaller spaces.
I hope these tips inspire you to make some small changes so you can feel your best as we head into the new year.
